Sons visit Milledgeville

On Friday, September 30, 2011, the day before the Oliver Hardy Festival in Harlem, Georgia, a group of Sons went to visit Milledgeville, to take a tour of some of the locations that are associated with Oliver Hardy's life as a young man growing up and living there with his family. Milledgeville is about 90 miles southwest of Harlem. The tour was conducted by local professor and fellow Son, Bob Wilson, who is an expert on the life of Ollie in Milledgeville. The photo below shows the Sons who were on the tour, and thanks to Marshall Korby for sharing this nice photo with us.

Top row (l-r): Russell Clay (UK), Gene Sorkin (Ohio), Sheran Rioux (Florida), Roy Rioux (Florida), Marshall Korby (Michigan), Cliff Sawyer (Massachusetts), Linda Bailey (South Carolina), Bob Wilson (Georgia)

Bottom row (l-r): Dave Simpson (UK), Roger Robinson (UK), Flip Lauer (Ohio)

You can see from the sign that they are right near the location of the Milledgeville Hotel where Ollie's mother was the manager. Just across the street to the left is where the Palace Theater was where Ollie worked about 1909. To the right of the Milledgeville Hotel location, if you go down the street about a block and turn right and cross the street, you will pass the location (on the right) of where the church was that Ollie and his family attended; and continue straight a short distance and you'll be right at the front door of Georgia Military College, where Ollie got his schooling, including where he graduated from high school. And there are so many other interesting sites to visit in that city that are related to Ollie's life there. Those on this tour reported having a wonderful time and experience.

Artwork for sale on website

You have kindly published details of our group's intention to rescue the old school building which Stan attended in Bishop Auckland. Our intentions are to transform the building into several elements one of which will be a small museum dedicated to Laurel and Hardy.

Our website can be found at http://www.stanlaurel.org.uk. We are currently trying to obtain funds to raise money in our quest and we are hoping for some grants. We have included on our site some Stan and Ollie artwork which will be limited to 10 prints each and which will be individually numbered. We also intend to keep adding to this portfolio as we go.

Leonard's appreciation

Ant Mitchell-Waite was able to fulfil a request from luminary Leonard Maltin for a copy of Ant's book Laurel & Hardy's Animated Antics. Leonard wrote to Ant saying, "I can't tell you how impressed I am by your diligence in tracking down all these appearances - and weeding out the bogus information (mostly online)!  What a wonderful and useful reference this is. I'm so glad you were able to track down one lone copy for my library - and now I'm the envy of several friends."

Did you see?

Did you see The Simpsons on Channel 4 on 2nd October? They showed an episode called Another Simpsons Clip Show that included a clip from an earlier episode called Lady Bouvier's Lover. The Simpsons go to see Grampa at the old peoples' home. Outside is a sign that reads, "Hal Roach Apartments - Living in the heart of the cemetery district."
