The Fiddle and the
Bow
Andrew Craig Shepherd
performed his highly acclaimed play The Fiddle
and the Bow at the Lord Stanley pub in Camden
Town, London on 1st and 2nd August as part of the
Solo Festival. On the first night, supporting
Andrew in the audience were Roger Robinson and Paul
Allen from the Saps at Sea Tent, who described it
as "Another excellent performance".
This is the biggest
Festival of One Man Shows in Europe and featured
over forty acts - and the fantastic news is that
Andrew won the award for Best Male Act.
Congratulations
Andrew!

On the
Waverley
On 31st July, sixteen
members of the Bonnie Scotland Tent and friends
took a trip on the paddle steamer Waverley. Grand
Sheik Janice Hawton marked the occasion by
presenting a sizable donation to the steamer's
preservation fund, on behalf of the
tent.
Dockwray
I was curious about the
rather strange spelling on vans of the large gas
contractor CLANCY-DOCRA and wondered if the DOCRA
bit was an acronym. I asked an Irish builder friend
in the pub what he thought but he was unsure if
maybe it was Irish. I Googled it and lo and behold
there are about six different spellings of this
name including DOCKWRAY. Thomas Dockwray (vicar of
Stamfordham) laid out the square to his mother's
wishes (she had married a local salt
merchant).
Anyway, the root of this
name is in Cumbria not far from where Stan Laurel
was born.

Soak a
Sheik

At the Soak a Sheik event
at the Brats' meeting in August, Grand Sheik Heppy
(above) volunteered to have wet sponges thrown at
him to raise funds for charity.

To get proceedings going,
Garry Fairchild (above - landlord of our venue, the
New Crown Inn) threw the first wet sponge, whilst
Vice Vizier Brian Jessop (below) pondered where he
had put his £1 coin.

With 25 members in
attendance, £40 was raised for charity with
the vast majority being raised by Heppy on what was
quite a cold summer evening. Heppy did get the
opportunity to throw a few sponges too at the
previous Grand Sheik, who raised a mere £3 of
the total.
So Hats Off to Heppy. Wet,
he was soaked!

Bowler Dessert 74
Bowler Dessert 74 is great. You've got a lot of
interesting articles in the new issue. I'm glad to
see Dwain Smith's article on the misheard sayings
of "and dancing", and "you'll suffer for
this."

Favourite trivia; Ollie in shorthand - still trying
to figure it out.
Favourite contributor:
Gino Dercola, a real stalwart. I never met him but
in Bowler Dessert pages he is here, there
and thither.

Did you
see?
In Snog, Marry,
Avoid? (BBC3, 08.08.11.) one of the girls who
had a "make-under" was dressed up as a cross
between a Japanese geisha girl and Charlie Chaplin,
complete with bowler hat, false moustache and
walking cane. Presenter Jenny Frost called her "a
proper Charlie". The Ku-Ku song was playing
as she was interviewed.
