Marion Grave

I spoke to a "hospital person" on Powis Ward on 14th November. Marion had had her operation (no details of course) and is working hard on her recovery. No doubt the physios are getting her to do all kind of mobility stuff. There was no indication as to when she would be discharged, but it sounds like she's on the mend.

Time for a cig

Michael Ehret posted this unusual photo of Oliver Hardy on the Facebook pages of the Nutty Nut News Network.

Jeff and Andy

The Fiddle and the Bow

On 13th November Andy Shepherd successfully performed his play The Fiddle and the Bow for the Saps at Sea Tent of Southend-on-Sea and once more received a standing ovation. In the audience was Jeffrey Holland of Hi-De-Hi! fame, who described the play and performance as an excellent "Tour de Force!" Congratulations once again to Andy.

German tribute on TV

I received information from Wolfgang Gunther, Grand Sheik of the Two Tars Tent in Germany, regarding the documentary film about Laurel and Hardy made by Andreas Baum, the German independent film producer. The film is now complete and is scheduled for broadcast. It will be shown on ARTE TV, the French/German channel, on 28th December, 2011, at 8.15pm and 1st January at 9.30pm. An English version, with additional material, will be ready for viewing next year.

Andreas has made presentations using pieces of this film at several Sons conventions in the past few years.

Them Thar Hills Tent

On 5th November there was a meeting of the Them Thar Hills Tent in Darmstadt, Germany, with over seventy fans and members from five other German tents.

They saw five films, in colour and black and white, and two members (above) performed the dance from Way Out West.

Kay Becker from the One Good Turn Tent in Germany displayed the actual shirt from the film A-Haunting We Will Go.

Good idea

How about this for a million dollar idea? Graeme Green forwarded this advert from Manchester Greencycle UK from 7th November.

Did you see?

On That Sunday Night Show (ITV1, 06.11.11.) Adrian Chiles introduced a clip saying, "In a West Midlands carpet warehouse a scene played out reminiscent of Laurel and Hardy." The clip showed a man on a fork lift truck, which had a long roll of carpet on the end of one of the lift's forks, swing the fork lift round and the end of the roll hit another worker.

Claude Close RIP

Claude Close, the actor who played Oliver Hardy in a one-man theatre show Ton of Jollity in the early '90s, died in October at the early age of 55 years. I did watch the play in Oldham in 1993 and was very impressed with his performance in trying to portray Babe Hardy the man rather than Babe Hardy the comedian. I briefly met him afterwards and expressed my appreciation. He also appeared in many other plays and TV shows in character roles.
