Oliver Hardy Festival

We remind readers that the 23rd Annual Oliver Hardy Festival in Harlem will be on Saturday, 1st October, 2011. An estimated 30,000 people attended the 2010 Festival. Sparkie sent us the above photo from last year's event at which Sparkie and Pogo (third and fourth from left) were Grand Marshals, as they are every year. Details are at http://www.harlemga.org/ohfest.htm.

The Making of Stan Laurel

I now have a website up and running (www.themakingofstanlaurel.com) and also succumbed to pressure from my two sons to set up a "presence" (as they put it) on Facebook. No prizes for guessing its name (The Making of Stan Laurel). My most recent postings are a brief tribute to Stan's nephew Huntley Jefferson Woods who died this time last year and a video clip of him on national UK TV, when he put his mother's collection of Stan Laurel memorabilia up for auction.

Danny Lawrence

  • Eurospan, the distributor of Danny's book The Making of Stan Laurel, hiked up the RRP and McFarland (the publisher) and the author have no control over the distributor. Though Amazon is still charging too much (£27.71), other sources selling it via Amazon are a little cheaper.

In Hope

The Star (30.08.11.) had this photo of Haurel and Lardy, guests at the Hope Show, on the August Bank Holiday Monday in the Peak District. More than 8,000 people were estimated to have visited the show. The article was spotted by John Beardshaw.

Skegness

Dave Carlin of the Brats Tent was in Bradford and came across the above newspaper cutting photo in an antique dealer's showroom, showing Laurel and Hardy on a quad-tandem bike in Skegness in 1947.

Curry Night for Sheffield Brats

The next Curry Night for the Brats Tent is set for 17th October at the Koh-I-Noor in Handsworth, commencing at 8.00pm.

The event is open to all Sons. The Brats say, "It would be great to see Sons from other tents. We are hopefully going to screen films via a video projector whilst eating."

The cost for a hot buffet will be £10 per person. The venue has a car park.

Meet at the New Crown Inn around 7.00pm.

Did you see?

On both Dickinson's Real Deal (ITV1) and Flog It! (BBC2) on 14th September they had Laurel and Hardy autographs. Both sets of autographs were sold as part of sets. One went for £200 and the second (on Flog It!) went for £470. That is because Laurel and Hardy's manager had autographed it as well.

On Challenge TV on 30th August at last I managed to see the You Bet! with Wendy Fairie and the late Roy Castle and Ray Saunders - great Laurel and Hardy lookalikes. Sad that Roy Castle is no longer here.

Is Wendy still a member of the Sons of the Desert and did anyone see the fake Laurel and Hardy signatures on Rip Off Britain?

Nick Rich

  • Ed: I don't think Wendy is still a member.

Some steal

Dean Carroll spotted the following in Metro (11.07.11.) It reminded him of The Midnight Patrol. . .

Sariyah Malik, 21, tried to steal the wheels from an unmarked police vehicle in Spreitenback, Switzerland - but the officers were still inside. The Tunisian was caught by a team that was stationed in the area to catch car crooks.

Film Fun sighting

In the centre pages of the Film Fun comic, Fred Gittings found a picture strip of the film The Fighting Kentuckian, starring John Wayne with Oliver Hardy. It was in issues 1519 (26.02.1949.), 1520 (05.03.1949.) and 1521 (12.03.1949.).

Metro

There was an article in Metro (15.09.11.) about a bloke who does pencil drawings, done up to look like old photos. In what is a mock-up of what appears to be an old Victorian primary school photo, there, in the second-to-back row, is, or looks like, Stan Laurel, bowler hat, bow tie, wide-mouthed smile and all. The bizarre thing is, no mention is made of what clearly looks (to me) like Stan, which begs the question: why is he there? Behind him is what might be Oliver Hardy (bowler, wee moustache) although he's less obvious. "Stan" jumped out at me straight away.
