Dirty Work Tent

Gary Winstanley writes, "I'm hoping to get our meetings revived again soon, but first I need to know if there's still an interest for them. I know there are a handful of people who are, but it would be good to know there are many more that are. Also, some new interest would be most welcome.

He adds, "I would like to appeal to our existing members to spread the word and ask around if anyone else would like to come along. The meetings will remain as they were before (second Wednesday of the month), unless that isn't convenient. If we can get a good reaction from this, hopefully we can resume in Octember, just in time for our 3rd birthday."

Magic at the Saps

No we haven't disappeared - sorry to disappoint everyone! At the August Saps we had to use a different venue, the Alexandra Yacht Club, opposite our regular base, the Royal Navy and Military Yacht Club. The theme for the evening was "Magic" and a very magical evening it was too. We had several special guests: John and Mandy from Birmingham, who always bring sunshine and laughter with them, Nick Bowler from Kent, who bought some memorabilia including a large quantity of magazines to pass on to Dave Wyatt to replace items he lost in the dreadful fire he had in 2009 and Susie Day, who is the daughter of Southend's legendary Harry Day. You may recall that Harry met Stan in 1952 and took him to his house to wet his newborn baby's head. Susie was that newborn baby! It was wonderful to see them all and we had a surprise for everyone with the launch of the Saps at Sea very own Laurel and Hardy lookalikes, Stuart Burrell and Alan Chapman. Stuart and Alan are also members of the local magic club and so combined their tricks of the trade with a nice Laurel and Hardy sketch. Smiles and laughter abounded all night.

In the press

After Ken Livingstone idiotically likened his London mayoral battle with Boris Johnson to the struggle between Churchill and Hitler, one Cabinet minister was heard to say: "It's more like a choice between Laurel and Hardy."

Grandad

John Bogie became a grandad at 10.00am on 26th August to "a beautiful big baby boy, 8lb 2oz". No name yet.

Did you see / hear?

In EastEnders on BBC1 on 15th August, Tanya's sister Raine was defending Tanya's affair with her ex-husband Max Branning to their mother. The mother said, "You make them sound like Romeo and Juliet - Laurel and Hardy more like!"

On 20th August I was listening to the Ryan Tubridy show on Radio 2. He was asking listeners to contact the show with humorous shop names. One listener called to say there was a florist shop in Glasgow called "Floral and Hardy".
