Event in Edinburgh

Grand Sheik Charlie Lewis informs us of a forthcoming evening of entertainment at Cuthbert's coffee house at 94 Fountainbridge, Edinburgh on Friday 5th August. The evening will consist of a buffet tea followed by a Laurel and Hardy double bill featuring Block-Heads and Sons of the Desert. The cafe is unlicenced so it's a case of "Bring your own beer" with a £1 corkage charge. Entry to the event will cost £15.

Charlie says, "I hope as many of you as possible will come along. It will hopefully raise the profile of the Blockheads Tent and perhaps attract some new fans along to the meetings. 'The more, the merrier!' as Ollie once said."

The itinerary for the evening is as follows:

5:30pm Doors open
5:45pm Buffet served
6:30pm Block-Heads
7:30pm Intermission
7:45 / 8pm Sons of The Desert

Meetings start in St Helens

Grand Sheik Chris Coffey, of the Bacon Grabbers and The Big Noise Tents, writes in his Twice Two magazine, "The first meeting in our new St Helens home will be on Thursday 15th September between 6.00pm and 9.00pm in the Lecture Theatre of the United Reform Church on King Street, by the Landings Roundabout near the YMCA and the old Capital Cinema, which I am sure screened some Laurel and Hardy films. Admission is free to members. There is a coffee bar downstairs and we will be there after we have set up, a little after 5.00pm. It is wheelchair accessible and we are working on the hearing aid loop."

Good news from Bristol

Grand Sheik Peter Andrews tells us that his Fraternally Yours Tent of Bristol, having benefited from its resting period, will be back in business in autumn 2012. He has already produced a provisional schedule.

Not a Dunoon native

Bill Crouch saw a piece in The Sunday Post (10.07.11.) regarding Eric Campbell, the villainous foil in numerous Charlie Chaplin films. A plaque in Dunoon has been taken down, which had recorded for fifteen years that Campbell was born in that town. It transpires that a birth certificate proves that he was born in Cheshire in 1880, not in Scotland.

Parliament

Grand Sheik Janice Hawton writes, "There is to be a motion to the Scottish Parliament in which the Parliament congratulates the Sons of the Desert for holding their 32nd UK Annual Convention in Paisley from 29th April to 2nd May 2011; notes that this event was hosted by the local Bonnie Scotland Tent and was based at the Watermill Hotel in Paisley and included a successful walking tour of Paisley; and further congratulates the organisers for donating funds raised to a range of charities and worthwhile causes including Erskine, Alzheimer's Scotland, Inverclyde Cat Rescue and the SSPCA."

New CDs

Steven Gittins has a new item. The Story of Laurel and Hardy is described as, "A unique audio documentary which chronicles the lives of one of the most famous double acts in the world. Hear how it all began from their humble beginnings to becoming icons of the silver screen and the legacy they left behind." It is available as a set of two CDs, priced £12 (inc p&p). Glasses

Jo Mitchell-Waite is selling hand-crafted glasses, with the Boys, Fin and Laughing Gravy. They are £3.00 each. Contact midnightpatrol209@btinternet.com.

Debbie's artwork

Debbie Fox of the Saps at Sea Tent has come up with some great Laurel and Hardy paintings. She donated one to the Laurel and Hardy Museum in Ulverston and it is now proudly on display. Debbie is currently working on some paintings to sell in their gift shop.

Dazzle

I'm not happy with the news that Slow Dazzle will not be producing a full size calendar for 2012. I'd rather they drop the slimline one and keep the other. What about raising an online petition as a protest and to try and persuade them to change their plans?
